Monumental Geography, Johannesburg
From a century's worth of gold mining, the towering mine tailings of metropolitan Johannesburg form an artificial geography which spreads across the region. As derelict, toxic land forms these sites divide the city and its population. A proposal to develop these sites as new urban centers seeks to reinvent their value as a city wide cultural network.
